According to sources in Germany, Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger is preparing an audacious £17m bid for Borussia Dortmund star, Mats Hummels.
Recent decline in Vermaelen’s form and Bayern’s interest in Laurent Koscielny has forced the French manager to look at alternatives in the market, in order to shore up the defence.
Linked with Barcelona time and again, Hummels and Dortmund are yet to receive a formal approach from the Catalan giants this summer. Armed with a transfer warchest of around £70m, Arsene wenger is thought to be readying a £17m offer to lure the German defender to Emirates next season.
Hummels, who is an established international with Germany and had a stellar season last term with Borussia Dortmund, guiding them to the Champions league finale, is thought to be keen on moving to a top European club this summer, and with Arsenal offering Champions league football, a transfer cannot be ruled out.
Arsene Wenger sees Hummels as an upgrade on all o his current centre backs and is willing to break the bank to land the coveted German defender, who he believes, would help the Gunners mount a strong title challenge next season.

Arsenal have made an enquiry over the availability of Benfica defender Lorenzo Melgarejo, according to the defender’s agent.
The Gunners face competition from Turkish giants Fenerbahce for the signature however, with last season’s Super Lig runners-up also keen on the 22-year-old.
Neither club has made an official bid for the player, but Sky Sports claims the Paraguayan is valued at £5million by his club.
"Arsenal and Fenerbahce have enquired about Melgarejo. But so far there has been nothing concrete," Juan Gabriel Appleyard told Radio Monumental.
Melgarejo spent time with three clubs in his homeland before moving to the Estadio da Luz in the summer of 2011.
A one-cap international, manager Jorge Jesus has converted the player into a left-back at the start of last season, and he featured regularly throughout – including in the Europa League final against Chelsea.
Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, has money to spend this summer, with Sky also reporting that Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis is ready to back the manager in the transfer window.
Marouane Fellaini is another player to have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, and it could be a busy few months for the Gunners in north London.
