Stanislas Wawrinka was born in Lausana, Switzerland on the 28th of March 1985 and started playing tennis at eight years old. Son of a German father and Swiss mother, he left school at 15 to dedicate himself fully to tennis. He soon began to show his talent, winning the Junior title at Roland Garros in 2003.
The Swiss player, whose favourite surface is clay and the backhand his shot of choice, reached the third round of the senior competition at Roland Garros and played his first ATP title in Gstaad, although without success. A year later he bagged his first ATP title in Umag after Djokovic retired in the final. In 2007 he played two ATP finals in Stuttgart (where he lost to Rafael Nadal) and in Vienna (losing to Novak Djokovic).
On the 9th of June, 2008, he achieved his highest ATP ranking, moving into the No.9 spot. He played and lost two ATP finals (in Doha and in the Rome Masters 1000) and won Olympic Gold in the doubles at the Peking Games alongside fellow Swiss Roger Federer. Two years later, while placed among the Top 25 in the rankings, he won his second ATP title in Casablanca and for the third time reached the quarter finals of a Grand Slam at the US Open, a feat he would later repeat at the 2011 Australian Open. That year he won his third, and to date last, ATP title in Chennai, having lost in the final there a year previously.
