The lauta is a cross between a western guitar and an oud; it's tuned in fourths and fifths and is round-backed, like an oud, but has frets, and is used mostly for chords (which are harder to tune on a fretless instrument). Though I can't say for sure, it appears that greek guitar playing at this time is identical to the lauta playing, and that perhaps one would find one rather than the other had more to do with whatever instruments were around rather than a different instrumental tradition.

musical instr
Instrument of the lute family. It has a smaler body than the Greek laouto, the peg box is shaped like that of the UD, and carries a set of four double strings, which are tuned in unison. The tuning of the istrument is as follows and starting from lowest D- A - D- A. One characteristic of this lute is the layout of the fretting , which uses the Natural scale for the division and has 27 frets in the octave.
