'In 2010 I briefly flirted with the idea of signing Mario Balotelli, the talented but controversial Italian striker,' wrote Ferguson in his new book 'Leading'.
'I did my homework on him, speaking to a few Italian contacts, but the feedback I got confirmed it was too big a risk.
'I don't know whether this sort of candid professional courtesy exists in other fields, but for me it was a Godsend.'

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he considered a move to sign Mario Balotelli before the controversial Italian striker signed for Manchester City.

It was five years ago and Ferguson was United boss when he was made aware of a talented young player who had emerged through the ranks at Inter Milan.

He thought about a swoop but was soon deterred when he started to make calls to other managers in Italy find out more about Balotelli's personality.

Balotelli joined City in August 2010, helped them beat United in the FA Cup semi-final before winning the Man of the Match award in the final against Stoke.

His most famous moment, however, was a penalty at Old Trafford in October 2011, the first goal in a 6-1 thrashing, before he lifted his blue shirt to reveal a message on his vest which read: 'Why Always Me?'

It was soon after he had been in trouble with police for lighting fireworks in his bathroom at home, causing considerable fire damage.

The moment and slogan came to symbolise his time in English football, more memorable for his cheeky smile and off-field antics than anything he did with a ball, beyond an exquisite penalty taking technique.

Balotelli won the title and the FA Cup in two-and-a-half years with City but returned to Serie A with AC Milan in January 2013, before a £16million transfer to Liverpool in the summer of 2014 which proved disastrous.

He scored only once for the Anfield club during last season and re-joined AC Milan on loan in the summer.

Ferguson it seemed had a lucky escape, not only from Balotelli, but also from more dealings with his agent Mino Raiola.

'There are one or two football agents I simply do not like and Mino Raiola is one of them,' said Fergie. 'He and I were like oil and water. I distrusted him from the moment I met him.'

It was Raiola who became Paul Pogba's agent and supervised his move from Manchester United to Juventus when the midfielder was 18.

Sir Alex Ferguson expects Ryan Giggs to be a 'great manager' and revealed he would have made him his assistant had the Wales winger not gone on for so long as a player.

Giggs, the most decorated player in Manchester United history, carried on playing past his 40th birthday, and became player-coach on the staff when David Moyes replaced Ferguson at Old Trafford in 2013.

Moyes quickly moved on and Giggs took the reins on an interim basis. He remains at United as assistant to Louis van Gaal and many expect him to be the eventual successor to the Dutchman, who has promised his wife he will retire in 2017.

Ryan Giggs is eventually going to be a great manager,' said Ferguson, in his new book 'Leading'.

'He has intelligence, presence and knowledge - but there was no chance that I would have ever asked him, or any other player, to consider being my successor while he was still fortunate enough to be playing.'

Ferguson gave Giggs his United debut in March 1991, and together they won 13 Barclays Premier League and two Champions League finals.

The pair may even have worked side-by-side in the coaching team had Giggs not been able to extend his career for so long.

Ferguson said: 'There is every chance that he would have been my assistant in my final five years at Manchester United, alongside Mick Phelan.'

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Pep Guardiola was his first choice to succeed him as Manchester United manager.

Ferguson met Guardiola during a brief holiday in New York in September 2012, when the former Barcelona coach was enjoying a sabbatical in the States.

Four months later, Bayern Munich announced Guardiola would replace Jupp Heynckes at the end of the season, forcing United to resort to other candidates.

Ferguson insists Jose Mourinho had agreed to return to Chelsea, despite reports to the contrary, and other alternatives, such as Louis van Gaal and Jurgen Klopp, were unattainable.

"I asked Pep to phone me before he accepted an offer from another club but he didn't and wound up joining Bayern Munich in July 2013," Ferguson writes in the book, Leading.

“Life is such that the best of theories, or the best of intentions, sometimes don’t translate into practice. Believe me, the United board wanted nothing more than to select a manager who would be with the club for a long time.

“When we started the process of looking for my replacement, we established that several very desirable candidates were unavailable.

Ferguson maintains he decided to retire in December 2012 after his wife's sister, Bridget Robertson, died.

United ultimately appointed David Moyes, who lasted less than a year, on Ferguson's 'recommendation'.

Phelan was Ferguson's assistant for five yearsPhelan was Ferguson's assistant for five years
“I’m sure there are things that David would do differently if he had the opportunity to relive his time at Old Trafford,” Ferguson explains. “Such as keeping Mick Phelan [Ferguson’s assistant], who would have been the invaluable guide to the many layers of the club that Ryan Giggs is to Louis van Gaal today.

“There is no point suddenly changing routines that players are comfortable with. It is counterproductive, saps morale and immediately provokes players to question the new man’s motives. A leader who arrives in a new setting, or inherits a big role, needs to curb the impulse to display his manhood.”

Paul Scholes, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs were the only four world class players of Sir Alex Ferguson's 26 year reign of Manchester United, according to the manager himself.

"If you read the papers or listen to the television commentators, we seem to be awash with 'world-class' footballers," Ferguson explains in his new book 'Leading'.

He continued: "In my book there are only two world-class players playing today: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I don't mean to demean or criticise any of the great or very good footballers who played for me during my 26-year career at United, but there were only four who were world class: Cantona, Giggs, Ronaldo and Scholes.

"And of the four Cristiano was like an ornament on the top of a Christmas tree."

His views will likely put the noses of a few former and current Manchester United players out of joint. Among those who it could be argued fall into the 'world class' bracket during Ferguson's time at the Old Trafford helm include Roy Keane, David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rio Ferdinand, Jaap Stam, Nemanaja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, Edwin van de Sar and Peter Schmeichel.

Ferguson further explained his view point in an interview with the BBC.

"They made the difference and the evidence is there," he said, calling Cantona "the catalyst", adding "when we brought him in we won the league that season - it was his mere presence and his ability to make and score goals."

He went on: "The younger breed like Ryan and Scholes were just fantastic players and the thing about those two was longevity.

"Are there players who have played right through the whole of the Premier League and performed at the level they have? There are none, absolutely none.

"Of course Ronaldo was just a complete genius of a player."

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed how he created a rule to ensure no Manchester United player would be paid more than him during his final years as manager at Old Trafford.
Ferguson persuaded the Glazer family and chief executive David Gill to double his money on the spot after they had negotiated a lucrative new contract to keep Wayne Rooney from the clutches of Manchester City in 2010.
The new clause was agreed without hesitation, he explained in his new book 'Leading' and maintained it was an unhealthy practice for clubs to allow star players to earn more than the manager.
Wayne Rooney was set to get a new deal in 2010 which would have seen him paid more than Sir Alex Ferguson
chief executive David Gill that this was unfair, and a new deal was agreed with the manager

Ferguson told chief executive David Gill that this was unfair, and a new deal was agreed with the manager
'When the Glazers and David Gill agreed to a big increase in Wayne Rooney's salary, they wanted to know how I felt,' said Ferguson.
'I told them I did not think it fair that Rooney should earn twice what I made and Joel Glazer immediately said: 'I totally agree with you but what should we do?
'It was simple. We just agreed that no player should be paid more than me. We agreed in less time than it takes to read the previous sentence.'

Rooney was 24 years old at the time, with less than two years on his deal and had been flirting with what would have been a controversial move to Manchester City.
He even released a statement which questioned the ambition of the club, only to reverse his decision when United smashed their wage structure to keep him.
The England striker signed his new deal in October 2010, with reports at the time claiming it was worth £180,000 a week.
Ferguson insisted 'no rift between me and Rooney' in 2013

It made him the best paid player in United's history. In February last year, he signed for another five years at £300,000 a week.
Ferguson also explained that for the last 15 years of his tenure at Old Trafford he operated on a one-year rolling contract with a pay-off worth two years' salary if he was ever sacked.

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed how he held talks about leaving Manchester United for Inter Milan.
Although he spent a staggering 26 years at Old Trafford, the Scot has admitted his career could have taken a different path.
Ferguson - who also had job interviews with Barcelona and Wolves before he joined United - made the confession in his latest book Leading.

And despite never mentioning it in either of his 1999 and 2013 autobiographies, Ferguson has now claimed his reign could have been cut short by a move to Italy.
However, a combination of a glimpse at the Inter's transfer plans and his wife's preference for life in Britain curtailed the move.
Ferguson writes: 'Later in my career, I met with a representative of Massimo Moratti, the long-time owner of Inter Milan.
'That went out of the window the moment he showed me a list of the players they were going to buy and sell, which is just as well because I would never have persuaded Cathy to move to Italy.'
Ferguson also reveals that he has only done 'a few job interviews in my life'.
The first was at Scottish side Queen's Park in 1974, which he described as a 'disaster' because he was 'completely unprepared'.
Ferguson has said it would have been difficult to convince his wife Cathy (right) to swap England for Italy

Ferguson, who had been expecting to meet the chairman, admits he was 'nervous' when he walked into a room with a committee including men he had played with.
'I was shockingly bad', he recalls. 'I spent the whole interview trying to justify myself and my record, rather than just being myself.
Queen's Park eventually rejected him in favour of Dave McParland.
Ferguson was also interviewed for jobs at Wolves in 1982 and Barcelona in 1983 - both of which were during his time as Aberdeen manager.

Sir Alex Ferguson has called for patience in Louis van Gaal's bid to bring silverware back to Manchester United, but says he is already a great admirer of his successor's style at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal is just 14 months into a rebuilding job after Ferguson's 26 years at the United helm, but the Dutch boss' confidence and experience have already struck a chord with his predecessor.
United's legendary former manager says he loves Van Gaal's press conferences and thinks his title-winning experience in Holland, Spain and Germany give him the edge every United boss needed.

In his new book, 'Leading', Ferguson admits that he considered Van Gaal as an immediate successor when he retired in 2013, and he now seems more than happy with the eventual top man at Old Trafford after David Moyes' problematic spell.
'Louis' got the great background, Bayern Munich, Barcelona,' Ferguson said on Tuesday morning. 'He's got the pedigree, no doubt about that.'
Van Gaal's press briefings as United boss have seen him sing his own name, row with reporters and even walk out on questioning - something Ferguson admires from his own time as boss.

'I love his press conferences, they are brilliant,' the 73-year-old told Sky Sports News. 'I can see some of the press guys twitching in their seats as he answers some of the questions. He's got the confidence to deal with that.
'I don't get to training sessions but I love watching the team. He's got experience, he knows how to handle these things, it's going to get time, everyone's different, taking over from myself it's going to take time to get his team on the pitch.'

Ferguson, who has overseen many of his former players moving into management down the years, also had a tip for a rival that he believes has the ability to go on to become a top boss.
The 13-time title-winning Scot picked out Tony Adams, Jamie Carragher and Gianfranco Zola as three of his former opponents that he most admired, while reserving special praise for the Liverpool man now working as a Sportsmail columnist and Sky Sports pundit.

'I think he’s got a career (Carragher),' Ferguson said of the 37-year-old's managerial potential. 'He’s in television, but I also think he will be a good manager, I really do, I think he’s got the material.
'As opponents, if you take Tony Adams and Jamie Carragher, you would say they weren't the most talented players, they weren't going to carve open defences, they weren't the quickest, but they had this inner desire and determination. They were always going to be winners.'
