Current LFC Homegrown Players: Henderson Milner Lallana Sturridge Clyne Gomez Oxlade-Chamberlain
Future: Alexander-Arnold Solanke Brewster
Some thoughts about this is the thread below:
Many of the players I see people eager to get rid of, either currently, or in the past, are our homegrown players. Guys like Henderson and Lallana are ok players with technical limitations and are not at the level of quality of our top players like Salah, Mané etc.
However homegrown players are a necessary evil. We must have 8 of them to have a full sized squad registered for the PL. Currently we appear to have less than the full-sized squad, as we only have 7 HG players. Thankfully Trent & Solanke already make 1st team appearances as U21s.
With Greg Dyke talking about raising the number of HG players to 12 for each squad, it becomes important to develop guys like Solanke & Brewster, as HG players are invariably oveplrpriced. It's also important to live with the flaws of some of the senior HG players.
To replace Lallana, we can't just go out and purchase ANYONE. He has to be replaced by a player who is either better now or potentially upgrades him, but is also a HG player who is 21 or older, and thus very expensive. It's sometimes better to live with what you've got.
The smart thing to do is develop as many HG kids as we can and hope the number of Trents & Joes that get into the 1st team are sustainable. It's why we've extended contracts for Ojo, Kent etc. The alternative is to pay eye-watering sums on limited players (eg £20m on Lallana)
It also means we will be sometimes slow to get rid of players who aren't contributing much. Lallana is going to be a squad player for us from now on, and possibly Henderson will be as well. But we will keep them on as experienced pros who have played at a reasonably high level.
To replace them even with similar quality is difficult and expensive. To upgrade on them positionally is simple, but to upgrade them as part of the HG list is much harder. That's why you'll see Hendo, Lallana and young guys like Solanke get more chances than others might get.
It's not just us who are in this position, Chelsea have to put up with Danny Drinkwater, while Ross Barkley appears to have dropped out of the team after starting in the first XI at the beginning of the season (could be injured, I've not paid attention to them).
City have Fabian Delph. The quintessential player who would be a star at any small team but is unable to get much of a game at a big club. Spurs have got a bit more value out of the HG system than others, but even they've still got guys like Winks & Walker-Peters in their squads.
