Don't despair, Liverpool fans - our man in France Andrew Gibney explains why the Belgian's inclusion is not what it seems


People love a Bank Holiday weekend. That extra day off usually guarantees pubs bursting at the seams, but over in Liverpool, there was another reason to wallow in a pint of self-pity.

Not only was Brendan Rodgers' side humiliated 6-1 away at Stoke City, but when they woke up on Monday morning, Divock Origi had been named as one of the worst players in Ligue 1.

The French newspaper L’Equipe is infamous for their strict review of the weekly Ligue 1 games, but they don’t always call it down the line.

But Liverpool fans need not despair - there is no way Origi should be anywhere near that list.

Unlike in England, L’Equipe are very reluctant to handout high grades. Since their records began there has been only seven players have ever been awarded a Perfect 10. Even nines are a rarity and a great performance will usually get you no more than an eight.

Origi’s teammate Sofiane Boufal delivered three assists in Lille’s 4-1 win over Metz on Saturday, if it was in England, he would have been awarded a nine or a ten - L’Equipe granted him a 7/10.

It is different to how rankings are awarded in Britain. In L’Equipe you start with a four or a five, if you have an average game, you can expect to stay there. Play well and you can usually make the Team of the Week with a 7/10 – in England you're more likely to start with a seven.

Looking at the small print of L’Equipe’s “Worst Team” it states that this is based only on players that have received more than 21 grades. That rules out forwards like Nicki Bille Nielsen – one goal in 19 games for relegated Evian - or Metz striker Juan Manuel Falcon – four goals in 21 appearances.

You could just have easily had players like Monaco’s Dimitar Berbatov, Ola Toivonen of Rennes or Ricky van Wolfswinkel on loan from Norwich, but they don’t have the same editorial impact as slating Origi does.

There is no doubt that it has been a mixed season for Origi. On the back of his performances for Belgium at the World Cup, Liverpool pounced to sign him, but the condition was that he returned immediately to Lille for the season. He started well enough, scoring three goals in six games, but his team were struggling for form.

He did endure a huge dip, going 17 games in Ligue 1 without a goal will bring anyone’s rating down, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

When Lille sold Salomon Kalou to Hertha Berlin last summer, they took away the focal point of their attack. No experienced player was brought it to replace him and although he asked for the responsibility, the pressure was placed on Origi’s shoulders.

During the dry spell, Origi started 12 of those 17 games, mostly due to the fact there was no one else. Lille averaged less than a goal a game during that run. You could be extra critical of the young striker if he was missing chance after chance and he was dragging Lille down. The truth was this was a poor team playing badly.

Up until February there would have been a case for labelling Origi’s season as a flop, but you would have to put the whole team in the same category. The 20-year-old was booed by his own fans against Wolfsburg in the Europa League and as they beat the then league leaders Lyon 2-1 at home.

It was born more out of frustration than anything else. They expected more from the striker, and due to his pending move to Liverpool, they let him know about it. If Lille hadn’t already sold him in the summer, there is no way they would have let their feelings known so vocally.

Then Lille began to find their feet, new signing Sofiane Boufal picked up the baton from the Belgian and breathed new life into the side. Origi would blast away his goal drought with a hat-trick against Rennes, the irony being that he had played no better or worse than he had in the win over Lyon, just he was rewarded with a couple of breaks.

L’Equipe rewarded him with an 8/10 that day, but against Lyon he was given 4/10. At times, to make a point, they will give a player an even lower score than they merit. Against Wolfsburg – the night he was booed after missing a penalty – he was given a 3/10.

To report that Origi “has been named” in L’Equipe’s worst team of the year is slightly misleading – it has been taken from their overall average rating. Origi finished with 4.46. This in itself is harsh, especially when you look at the last few months of the season.

Anyone actually picking a worst XI would be hard-pushed to include Origi after scoring eight goals this season.

Since has hat-trick against Rennes, Origi has started five out of the last nine matches – averaging 55 minutes per game. Making an impact off the bench has suited him more than being Lille’s first and only choice upfront. He has benefited and so has the club.

He came off the bench during the Derby du Nord and scored Lille’s third goal – sealing a much needed victory over their rivals Lens. Boos had turned to cheers and it was clear that the home support were once again proud of their young striker.

Liverpool fans need not be worried by L’Equipe’s ranking of the young forward.

Use him in the right way and give him time to develop and they have an excellent young player on their hands.

The only thing they should be worried about is pinning all their hopes on a kid still learning his place in the game, as Lille did early in the season.

Тренер,аз споменах във предишни постове,че ако янките не докарат класа и само продават най-добрите ни играчи,значи перат пари чрез клуба и не ги интересуват успехи. Сега оставят ли пернатко,аз спирам да се интересувам от отбора. Това не е моят Ливърпул!!!
