In general terms what has been the issue?
“No, it would take too long. Back one year ago all the teams were struggling as well and it is just going through the process of putting a car on track with a new power unit. The technology of this car is amazing and it just takes time to fine tune and go over every detail to make sure you don’t stop running.”
What percentage of your job sheet do you think you will have got through in Jerez?
“I think at least 50 per cent – we haven’t done a lot of laps, but progressionally [sic] we have gone through processes and the experience we gain here is massive.”
Ron Dennis talked about building the cultural divide between McLaren and Honda – you want to be as united as Mercedes and Ferrari, is that going to take time?
“Sometime maybe, I would say today I am very impressed with the quality of the relationship we have and even if you have two cultures, today we are working very well.”
What have the drivers said about the car you have built?
“The less complaints the better the car is generally so it is good they haven’t complained much. The base looks good, so now we need to run it enough to develop it.”
At the next test can you close the gap to the teams behind Mercedes and head to Melbourne confident of being in the points?
“I would not say it is like this. We will put our mind set in a way that we will do everything to make sure we are 100 per cent and put us in a position to take any opportunity. The first short-term target is the Barcelona test and to make sure we cover more laps and can unlock more details towards developing the car. After that we will put ourselves in a position to hopefully be competitive in Melbourne.”
Looking at the running so far in Jerez do Mercedes still have an advantage? And have they changed their package much?
“They definitely look confident, they have done a lot of laps and have even gone through some testing programmes which we never cover at the first test, so they look ready. I think this is just an evolution of their car and it was already very fast last year and it is going to be even faster this year. It is just how much performance the other teams have found to close the gap, but they will be the team to beat.”
